ODD SHOT

Odd Shot by Katney. To see who's participating, visit Katney.

My entry for ODD SHOT is = The usage of Plastic Bags.
Here in the UK, they want us to use less plastic bags, because of the litter they cause, also they cant be recycled, and as my photo shows they become litter on all our Highways and roads, streets, country side. Shops are now charging if you need a Plastic Bag for your shopping.
Do you have problems with plastic bags in your Country??.

i think that's a really good practice. and i love using those cute little eco bags that are popular nowadays.

Perfect illustration of the problem. Here we are encouraged to use cloth shopping bags, rather than plastic.

Great picture... these things drive me made.. I detest them

I don't see much of a problem around here with the plastic bags but there is a huge problem with other litter such as drink cans and fast food wrappers. It really irritates me to see our roadsides littered up like they are.

You have pointed out an important problem dear Imac! In my country (Turkey), there is not yet a prohibition for plastic bags. But several ONG's for the protection of the environment as well as big supermarkets like Carrefour, Migros, Kipa invite the consumers to use cloth shopping bags instead of plastic bags. I have bought a cloth shopping bag from Carrefour and now use this one everytime I go shopping to the supermarket.

You bet we have. In some areas (ours among them) plastic bags and other other forms of plastic packaging etc are now collected once a moth for recycling, so things are looking up.

We tend to be good about recycling on the Isle Of Man.The island s too small not to.

You have a highlighted a very worthwhile point here.

Greece has a big problem with plastic bags. they are all over.It seems that we don't have the "save our planet" culture yet.

Here in Sweden...everyday shopping goes mostly still with plastic bags, of course, there are some voices heard, but not much. But we have quite good culture to clean after ourselves...in Estland there is less culture but we have lot of talk about the problem.
I myself forget all the time to take special bag with...:(

Imac: The problem at times isn't the plastic bags its the people who don't care to be careful and recycle.

Yes we do. They are trying to outlaw these plastic bags and are encouraging us to buy and use reusable cloth bags. I currently own 6 of those kind of bags. However, the clerks look at me funny when I show up with them. the use of them here in the sticks isn't too prevelent.

I remember when they said save a tree, use plastic. I'm sure it's a problem that needs addressing everywhere it's used.

I reuse my plastic grocery bags for trash.

Oh yes, we absolutely do in America. Thank goodness cities are getting recycling programs in place. My husband worked very hard on this when he worked at the US. Environmental Protection Agency. I carry a thin cloth bag in my handbag all the time.

Here they give you 6 cents credit for each bag you bring to pack up your groceries. They can be re-used plastic bags from anywhere or paper bags or the cloth bags that they sell in different stores with their advertising on it. They aren't particular. I wasn't sure which place I wanted to "advertise" so have nt participated yet. BUT on Saturday, when I helped clean up the downtown area, they gave us free shopping bags and I got two so that solves that! Now, I jsut have to remember to take them when I go to the store.

I also use plastic bags to hold my trash to take to the dumpster in our building - line my trash cans in several rooms with them.

We do indeed ... and there's been a push for people to use sacks made of cotton or other fibers that can be reused indefinitely to replace both plastic AND paper .. this is indeed a great illustration of why plastic bags should be banned.

And its a good odd shot!

Our people must have been at the same meeting or read the same journals because we hearing the same things. Now the stores are putting out reusable bags to buy to carry your purchases home.

Yes, we do. I agree-extra charge for plastic. I see them in the trees, on barbed wire fences and stuck under cars/trucks all the time. I try to use my cloth shopping bag as frequent as possible.
Great odd shot, and lets all start using less plastic!

Plastic bags can be such a nuisance, I am trying to get into the habit of taking a cloth bag with me.

In Ireland we have to buy all plastic bags if we don't take our own cloth bags. Shops still give bags free, but these bags are made from recycled paper.
You have a good post here.

Good shot, imac. Yes, we have a problem here. Most of the wind-blown plastic bags seem to have originated at a Wal-Mart, even though Wal-Mart encourages folks to bring back their empty bags and has provided bins in each store for that purpose. Easy to see they are not used by all customers. Urrggh!

I think the WORLD is having problems with them; especially the wildlife. I think that's a good idea to charge for them. I haven't heard of anybody here doing that.

I love plastic bags. They make carring groceries so much easier. I save all I can get. Keep a drawer full. Got some in my car. Use them for everything. When I go to the garden to pick vegies, I want each different vegie in a different bag. Don't put those onions in with those cukes..everything gets it's own bag. I line the trash cans with them. We shop at Aldi's and we don't buy bags. All my plastic bags in the car come in so handy!! Oh, I'm gonna miss them. *sob

We gather all the plastic bags we use adn return them to the supermarket. I don't know if they recycle them, or just provide a collecting bin so that there are fewer odd shots such as yours.

It's a mixed bag here in Canada (no pun intended. *L*). There's a push to have them banned in the various provinces. There's a valid argument, however, that it will make things worse in the long run. Most people reuse their plastic grocery bags. Although we usually have our cloth bags when we go shopping, there are times when I deliberately leave them at home because we're running out of plastic bags at home. The alternative is to buy packages of plastic bags for what we do use them for, which wastes more resources.

A few places have recycling bins for the bags, though idiots too lazy to take two steps over will use them as garbage bins, which is really irritating. There's a chain of grocery stores that charges for bags. Ten cents each, I think. Biodegradable bags are available, though they're more expensive and not as durable, so not a lot of grocery stores use them.

I think the biggest problem with stray plastic bags is that they're so light, they simply get blown out of public garbage cans, etc. It's not like people are deliberately tossing their plastic bags out the window when they're done with them. :-/

Yes, we have the same use of plastic bags - a few years back there was a BIG push to eliminate paper bags. Some plastic bags are recycled, along with recycled wood, to make decking. Trex is one company that uses them. On windy, trash pickup days, I often find one or two in the yard. In our area, there is also a push to recycle plastic bottles, paper, cans, and cardboard.

Excellent post, imac. Things are changing slowly here with the plastic bags problem, but most people realize the need for a drastic change.
