HEADER CHALLENGE - 12-02-14
From the Ground by Kathy

My Music this week is
A Hymn called HIGHER GROUND
I'm sure you all will enjoy listening while you take this tour.

My Header
Roman Spa Baths from the City of Bath -UK
The Hot Spa Spring water that supplies these baths comes from under the Ground
Let me give you a quick tour of these Hot spring water Roman Baths

This Sacred hot spring water at the temp of 46c degrees rises here at the rate of 1.170,000 litres everyday and has been doing so for 1000s of years.
In the past this natural phenomenon was beyond human understanding and was believed to be the work of the ancient Gods in Roman Times.

Shall we enter -

As you enter - note the elegant Dome

From the terrace you can see Bath's Beautiful Cathedral.
These statues date back to 1894 - when these baths were renovated and opened.
The Roman Baths extends under the modern ground level
beneath the streets of the City of Bath.

This is a model of what it would have looked like in Roman Times
Are you ready to go underground?
then follow me --

As we go underground, we are met by folk dressed as Roman citizens - they are here to answer any questions you have, also you get a phone so you can listen to all the history on items on show.

Here we are underground of  the streets of Bath City
in Roman times.

As the Romans thought the hot water was from the Gods, they built a Temple to worship them, here are some of the Temple huge stones.
Also they built an Altar
Some stone of the actual Altar.

This Great Temple and Alter was built to worship the Goddess Sulis Minerva who had healing powers.
The Head of the Goddess Sulis Minerva

The Hot Spring overflow
In the Roman days - their drainage system were lead pipes taking the overflow under the streets to the river.

Also on show - we have a Skeleton of a Roman Man found nearby while excavating and a reconstruction head of this Roman Man.

This is only a third of whats on show, it can take you up to 3-4 hours to see everything.
A real worthwhile visit to The Roman Baths of Bath City UK

The Roman Name for Bath City is
AQUAE  SULIS

I hope you all have enjoyed my take of Kathy's theme
of From the Ground - now
go to my side bar, near my shield and visit the other Headbangers and see what they have on show.

GOOD LUCK

Fascinating! It is lovely to see this place in such great detail. I used to travel through Bath for years with my family without stopping. And now I know what it is like. Thank you for such a great tour.

Fantastic journey! The Romans certainly knew how use stone. (I suspect a lot of the labor was provide by the local population of the time. The city of Bath must have quite a geothermal source to support its name.

I have visited a place in the Philippine Islands that has a similar name. "Los Baños" means the baths in Spanish.

You may want to alter your altar. The spelling, anyway.

Thankfully, we have no more use for altars in the search for higher ground. Christ's sacrifice was full and final. What wonderful news!!

You are kind of like my Britain Tourism Director! Love reading about and seeing the places and history on your side of the pond. I'd really love to travel over there someday--with my camera, of course!
