I know it all too well, the dreaded and feared Freemasons!
Back in 2007, I put a very similar photo on my blog, as we of course have a lodge in Nottingham.
Secret handshake and rolled up trouser leg at the ready!

The Square and Compasses of the Freemasons...
I see this quite a bit when out and about... I came across a grave this year that was well over 100 years old that had these and other such signs upon it.
I came across this which explains it a bit more..

In speculative Freemasonry, the Square and Compasses are emblematic symbols used in Masonic ritual.

The Square is an emblem of virtue in which we must "square our actions by the square of virtue with all mankind".

The Compasses exemplify our wisdom of conduct,... the strength to "circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds".

When these 2 Masonic tools are placed together with God (the Creator) as our central focal point... (just as King Solomon built God's Temple, first... and then built his house around it), peace and harmony is the result.

BTW.. I am far from ever being a mason... but find the subject very interesting.

The first one got it right. If you want conspirational theories (possibly even based on facts) - that is where to start).

I recognized this symbol immediately as one of the Freemasons. Interestingly; I can't for the life of me remember *how* or *why* I know this. It's just one of those things and the answer popped in to my head instantly when I saw the sign.

Great shot - and Happy New Year!
