Poem.

FOR HIS FAMILY AND COUNTRY.
by S.Mackinder
(c) 1995.
Over the hill came the sound of battle cry,
Just 2 miles away as the crow does fly,
Here - where he stood and fought,
Alls quiet now-for a bullet he had caught.
-----------
In a ditch wearing full battle dress covered in mud,
Lies a young soldier in water running red with blood,
His smoking empty rifle lying by his side,
For he had fought for his Country but died.
------------
A photo held crumbled tightly in his left hand,
The writing on the back was hard to understand,
As the picture was of a pretty young lady,
Who held in her arms a new born baby.

Dear Imac!
This poema is very impressive but so sad!Poor soldier but I think it was reality for many families in time of war.
Have a nice weekend dear friend
Léia :-)

You have caught the madness of war in simple, yet not so simple, sentences.

Thank you.

It is just so true for any war - the trenches of WW1 or yesterday in Afghanistan.

I have an old, silk embroidered post-card, written on in pencil, which some soldier sent back to his wife and family - he apologised for it being a little muddy, and asked her to kiss the boys and the baby - it made me cry as I read it, in some antique shop near Windsor, and I cherish it now, on behalf of that long ago family...
