I've always enjoyed seeing boats in one of the locks.. We saw some old ones which have been preserved-- when we were on the Blue Ridge Parkway recently... Interesting post, Stewart... Thanks! Betsy
I visited part of the Manchester ship canal (I think at the lock gates in this post!) this summer on my way to Norfolk. We were really impressed by the size and engineering of the canal! We were also fortunate to arrive just as an industrial barge was going through the locks. I'd no idea one could actually get a tour of them!
I love to visit locks...seeing these photos reminds me of when I was a little girl, and Daddy and Mama took me and my sister to see one here in the U.S. I was fascinated as I watched...took a lonnnng time to watch the entire process....but what a lesson I learned. Beautiful photos, as always, Stewart. Smiles, Jackie

The wheel and chain is such a lovely composition, I just want to sit and stare at it...
My Dad would love your post, he was always fascinated by ships and locks.

Nice pictures of the ship going through the lock. That's always an interesting process.
Nice shots of the action mac - great tour we're on! I'm surprised at the height differential - 17m is quite a bit!

Wow! Such an artist, you are...
I love the wheel and chain! Dams and Locks are all so interesting! I would love going through there!
Like Jinksy, my favourite is the wheel and chain. A bit of nostalgia there? Its all done by hydraulics these days.
