ANyway, I got to see them thatch a roof on the discovery channel and also to repair an older thatched roof on another channel on television and found it fascinating.
I also went to a reconstruction of one of our native American tribes that lived here a long, long time ago. They had homes built out of poles in a circular shape and the roof was thatched. They collected the grass and reeds along the Miami River which still runs past the place where they once lived. I was stunned at how tight the roof was and how few bugs and insects and spiders I assumed would be hiding in the thatch as they didn't have ceilings.
The only thing wrong with them was they had a hole for a chimney and the smoke tended to wander around for a while on its way up and out the hole.
I think these are really nice photographs and I hope a lot of people will come and get to see them.
So gorgeous!!! I just adore those thatched roofs! A friend of ours was born in Ireland and grew up in a house like the last one you've shown (with the red door). She commissioned me to do a watercolor painting of it, and I've fallen in love with Ireland's old homes ever since!
cozy! I like the white with red trim. Nice gardens too.
